Summary: My Quest! 2010-06-04
Comment: I am a agricultural scientist and do a lot of field work in the summer and I was looking for something to haul around a lot of ice water (or sports drinks). The insulating properties are sufficient to maintain and ice+water blend for over 8 hours at 80+ degrees. THe lid is not insulated so if it is laying on its side, the lid will sweat under high humidity condiditons.
The clear screw on base (for holding your grub) is unusual. It seems to work fine but raises the center of gravity of the jug significantly. If you were looking for something stable (i.e. that would not fall over in the car while cornering) I suggest removing the base unless you fill it with sand.
The "lock and load" freezer insert is a joke. It is filled with some liquid that has very little heat capacity that does not freeze (probably glycerine). I tried it once and threw it out. Now there are just the threaded rings in the bottom that prevent it from being wiped clean on the inside.
Strap is nice and adjustable - nice embroidery job. It is detachable and cleans up well.
The seal in the lid is solid. No leaks from it. But it does leak out of the vent valve. The vent valve is a small silicone rubber plug that was designed (i guess) to allow air in while sucking on the spout but seal the liquid from coming out when the spout is closed (essentially a one way foot-valve). The rub is that when you give a good hard suck on the spout, the valve stem seals its own hole and you endup vacuuming your tonsils. Not a good feeling. If you modulate your suction, you can get it to loosen up and then water will flow fairly well. Doesn't seem like they did a whole lot of product testing on this.
All I want is a large insulated jug to drink large quantities of fluid from quickly, that doesnt smell plasticky, leak (ever), or break.
On the other hand, it is what it is, just a big damn mug.
I suspect that I will keep on using it but I will keep searching for the Holy (Insulated) Grail. Unfortunately, this is not it.
