Virtually unbreakable, this lightweight, vacuum-insulated tote travels to school, work, or recreation and keeps foods hot or cold for up to six hours. Four microwave-safe, white plastic containers stack inside, providing enough capacity for a balanced meal: salad, soup, main dish, and dessert. The main-dish container and leak-proof soup container have twist tops, while the salad and dessert containers have snap tops. A stainless steel spoon travels inside a plastic case that slips into a plastic holder attached to the tote's side, and a removable black nylon strap slips over a shoulder to keep the tote upright. With its satin-finish exterior, stainless steel inner liner, and black plastic accents, the tote (9-1/2 inches high, 4-1/2 inches in diameter) is handsome, compact, and durable. Preheating or prechilling the tote with hot or cold water, depending on the lunch's contents, is recommended. --Fred Brack
I got this thermal lunch jar tote as a Christmas gift last year. I have to say, that after testing it for almost 1 year, it has really paid off!! I prefer hot lunches and food stays HOT !!! You have to preheat all the containers by filling it with boiling water, and the jar itself with boiling water. Close all lids. It should preheat for at least 10 minutes. I usually take 15 - 20 minutes making my lunch, so the soup/stew, rice, vegetables etc. are all piping hot. Then I dump all the water, dry the containers, and start filling them, and stacking them in the correct order.
With preheating, my food stays HOT. Many times this year, I didn't get to eat lunch until 2:30 or 3pm. The food was definitely hot (still had steam coming out of it). The very top container, is not steaming hot, but is warm (which means it's perfect for fruit or veggies or snacks). The other 3 containers are hot.
I find this comparable to Mr. Bento from Zojirushi. And they...Read more

Well, I have had this Nissan bento for over 5 years now. And as an adult, I have to say that I have no problems with it keeping food hot. I find that it is VERY COMPARABLE, even BETTER than the Zojirushi Mr. Bento. I like my food HOT, and being entirely stainless steel, it keeps all 4 containers hotter than the Mr. Bento. The top 2 containers in Mr. Bento tend to be cool (room temperature) after 4 hours or more, while in the Nissan, they are usually more than warm (but not steaming).
To make sure I am comparing correctly, I preheat the 4 containers with hot water before I pack, just like Mr. Bento.
Also, the construction of this bento is much more sturdier than Mr. Bento, which has a lot of plastic. Like the other reviewer, yes it will dent if it gets banged around. As an adult, I don't have any problem with it.
Also the Mr. Bento I got from Amazon in Xmas 2006, was made in Thailand, not Japan. Apparently it is too expensive to get it from Japan...Read more

This review is from: Thermos Nissan 48 Ounce Wide Mouth Stainless Steel Lunch Tote (Kitchen)
My 11 year old son loves this lunch tote. He likes soup and hot foods for lunch and this tote keeps food hot. The separate containers are good for a variety of foods, hot and cold.I thought of getting this for my 7 and 5 year olds, but the top is too wide for them to unscrew. The only downfall is being stainless it dents and my son is very active with his backpack he puts it into, and the outside of the tote has gotten a few dents in it. None of the dents has affected the inside area.
