Product Review

Zojirushi began in Japan in 1918 as a manufacturer of hand-blown vacuum bottles. They are still known today for their high quality vacuum insulated products. This stainless steel food jar is vacuum insulated so it keeps foods (or beverages) hot or cold for hours. Durable and sanitary 18/8 stainless steel construction will not rust, tarnish or stain, and will not leak harmful chemicals. The interior is polished stainless steel with a nonstick coating and is neutral to taste and smell. Tight -fitted lid has a gasket that seals lid to minimize leaks and maximize heat retention. It has a unique lid designed with a vent that allows users to release the pressure inside to make the lid easier to open when the food jar contains hot foods or beverages. A wide opening of 2 and one half inches makes it easy to fill and clean and allows user to eat directly out of the jar.

Zojirushi is a brand I trust and I have been really happy with the thermos bottles I purchased from this brand. The lid needs to be re-designed -- heat escapes from the vent inside the lid and the lid gets quite warm (hence I know heat is leaking out).

I mix my oatmeal/cereal and boiling water into this food jar when I leave for work and the oatmeal/hot cereal is "cooked" by the time I get to work and ready to eat! Since I only use this to bring hot cereal/oatmeal from home to work for breakfast, the heat leak is not a problem for me. But unlike their thermos bottles that can keep ice water cold even after more than 20 hours, the performance from this food jar is not what I would expect from Zojirushi. My "guess" is that you will be ok if you eat your food within 2 hours.

Other than this issue, this is very well-made, high-quality all around, exactly as one would expect from Zojirushi.

1.0 out of 5 stars The Non-Insulating Thermos, October 18, 2010

I bought this item thinking it would work as well as an old Nissan thermos I own. I was mistaken. Although the stainless steel sides of this container are vacuum sealed, the wide mouth plastic cap has absolutely no insulation. This is like heavily insulating a house and then leaving all of the windows open. The result is that boiling hot food placed into the preheated container is room temperature within 4 hours. This is an incredibly poorly designed thermos.

My experience has been great with this lunch jar. The food stays hot until lunch and has been great for my kids. Perhaps the previous reviewer had a defective one. But will try the Nissan!
